Patagonia is not, strictly speaking, a wine region. Nor is it an administrative region. It is a purely geographical region covering the southern portion of the South American continent, covering areas of both Chile and Argentina.
In compensation for its cooler climate and lower latitude, Patagonia is warmed by 'La Zonda', a wind created by the region's mountainous topography. This winter wind brings warm, dry air sweeping down from the hillsides, creating both dangers and benefits to the region. While it lessens the risk of vine disease, and brings warmth to high-altitude zones, the damage done by the 25mph (40kph) winds can be substantial.
Patagonia has gained recognition within the wine world due to the two wine regions located in its northern portion: the more established Rio Negro, and the newer, developing Neuquen. Patagonian wines are traditionally more European in style than their counterparts from the centre and north of Argentina, due to the cooler climate and higher latitude. While red wine is successfully made in Patagonia (Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Pinot Noir), it is the Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling which best represent the freshness of the climate.
